The Struggle for Sanity The Narrator, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Short Story, â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† has been one of the most scrutinized pieces of literature. Critics have analyzed it from various perspectives including feminist, anti-feminist, psychological to clinical. Some even claim the narrator’s work as an early feminist indictment of Victorian patriarchy. The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story about the narrator’s life experience afflicted with a depressive episode since adolescence. The narrator tells the story of a slight hysterical tendency after marriage and the birth of her child, driven to near madness was ordered to remain in bed, a frequently prescribed period of inactivity thought to cure hysteria and nervous conditions in women. The story appears to take place during a time period where women were oppressed. Women were treated as second rate people in society during this time period. Learning German Adjectives and Colors

German adjectives, like English ones, usually go in front of the noun they modify: der  gute  Mann (the good man), das  große  Haus (the big house/building), die  schà ¶ne  Dame (the pretty lady). Unlike English adjectives, a German adjective in front of a noun has to have an ending (-e  in the examples above). Just what that ending will be depends on several factors, including  gender  (der, die, das) and  case  (nominative, accusative, dative). But most of the time the ending is an -e  or an -en  (in the plural). With  ein-words, the ending varies according to the modified nouns gender (see below). In certain situations, colors can also be nouns and are thus capitalized: eine Bluse in  Blau (a blouse in blue); das Blaue  vom Himmel versprechen (to promise heaven and earth, lit., the blue of the heavens). The winter’s method will predict sales of the twelve months with an accuracy of 88%, but through the prediction, the management is likely to face the following problems; validation of alpha value, the value was obtained from trial and error method this method is not significantly valid. Courage in To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is the story of two children coming of age and learning about their hometown and the whole world. The two children in the story are Jem and Scout Finch. Jem and Scout live with their father, Atticus, in Maycomb County. Throughout the story, many problems arise which teach both children about bravery. The three bravest characters in the novel include their neighbor Mrs. Dubose, a convicted black man named Tom Robinson, and their father Atticus. Mrs. Dubose is an old, irritable, and morphine addicted neighbor of the Finch’s that lives down the street. The children get to know her by reading to her everyday after school. He shows emotional bravery by making his own choice, even if the consequences are brutal. â€Å" ‘They shot him,’ said Atticus. ‘He was running. It was during their exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over’ † (Lee, 315). It took Tom a great deal of bravery to climb the fence knowing he would be shot. Tom makes this decision because of the slim chance he could get away and run. Tom knew it was inevitable he was going to be sentenced guilty and sent to death. He had two options: continue waiting for weeks for his inescapable death sentence or, bravely make his own decision by jumping the fence. Tom’s actions teach the Finch children and the readers to always take a risk no matter how terrifying it may be. It may not have worked out for Tom, but at least he made his own choice instead of allowing others to decide his fate for him. Lastly, Atticus Finch shows both physical and emotional bravery multiple times throughout the story. He first exhibits his physical bravery by shooting down a rabid dog. â€Å"With movements so swift they seemed simultaneous, Atticus’s hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder. My mum, on the other hand, was a different case. â€Å"What do you want to go to a party for when you can stay in and play games with your family?† â€Å"You can’t go to someone’s party you don’t even know!† â€Å"I might have to ring up his parents to check if they’re allowing alcohol.† She went on and on like that for ages, until finally, I talked her round. â€Å"Okay, you can go. Under one condition†¦ You get a taxi back and are in this house before 11:30. Otherwise you’ll never go out again!† I hadn’t been to any proper parties before, Lauren’s gang always conveniently ‘forgot to mention it to me’ or ‘ thought I already knew about it’. I was nervous, and had no idea what to expect. With my vouchers, I had bought a pair of jeans, which I’d have never been able to afford myself. They were the perfect fit, and sparkled under the light. I also bought a new hair bobble, which had a glittery heart on it. I knew they looked good, but was scared what Lauren would think of them. It was amazing what effect she could have over my life. When the taxi pulled up In front of the address Michelle had given me, a sudden thought that she’d given me the wrong address on purpose nearly made me ask to be taken home. But then I heard the music booming from the house, and saw some people scattered near the doorway. ‘Keep calm,’ I told myself. Once I was inside, I saw how packed it was. Someone was trying to open the back door. I saw it was Josh. I began walking over when Lauren appeared in front of me. â€Å"Cindy! Didn’t think you would make it. Good party isn’t it? We have Josh to thank for that! I came round early to help him get ready. He asked me to, and I just couldn’t resist! He’s such a sweetie! Why had he danced and tried to kiss me when he could have Lauren? She was far prettier than me, and had a lot more confidence than me. GCSE Media Coursework Essay Baz Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet is a modern reconstruction based on the original play. The setting and dress were the only things that were changed and the dialogue was preserved in its original state even though it went through a bit of editing, therefore this movie serves as an excellent resource for anyone who doesnt understand the Shakespearean way of speaking. It tells the story of Two households both alike in dignity in fair Verona where we lay are scene. These two warring households are the Capulets and the Montagues and they fight all the time. What Baz Luhrmann has done is modernise the play by making it a film and adding modern technology such as guns and newspapers, as well as a petrol station into the set. I will be analysing scene one where the Capulets and Montagues first meet in the film. The scene is set in a petrol station, which represents the town square in Shakespeares original play. Three Montague boys pull up in a car in the petrol station and one of them, Benvolio goes to the toilet while the other two see a van filled with girls from a Ladies College and make some rude gestures at it as it pulls away. Then as the van pulls away the Montague boys see four Capulet boys. Subsequently an argument breaks out between the two sets of boys and a shootout starts. This shootout escalates into the streets and it becomes a third civil brawl. This scene is very important because it sets the tone for the rest of the play. People who do not understand the Shakespearean language can understand wants going on through the violence, love and action throughout the play. The western music, screeching car tyres and the newspaper headlines all add to the variety of different genres featured in the play. The rivalry and violence is extremely prominent in the first scene. Within the first two minutes Baz Luhrmann shows their rivalry by showing the audience a street with two Skyscrapers still in the construction process on either side of it but with the two families names, on one each. This shows that both families work in the same market. Violence in the first scene is made very clear due to the fact that it includes pictures and references to do with guns and violence in at least 50% of the 170 camera shots. There are several different types of techniques used by directors in films and some of them include; camera shots, editing, setting, genre, sound/music, Costumes and mise-en-scene. There are a variety of camera shots open to a camera operator in this scene that could include; Extreme close-ups, Medium shots and Extreme long shots. The chosen camera shots contribute to the impact that the scene has on the audience. A low angle shot is taken of Abra in the first scene and allows Abra to give a strong and fearsome impression on the audience and show that he is a mean and bad character. The audience will get this effect due to the fact that Abra makes them feel small by looking down on them. A high angle shot gives a character a more timid look that makes them look small and less intimidating an example of this is when a Capulet boy retreats back into his seat after Abra showing his mouth brace with the word sin on it. The camera shot allows the audience to feel imposing on the character because they are looking down on them. An example of a close- up shot is when the camera zooms on Tybalts face as well as the presenters and Benvolios face. When the camera zooms up on something like this it helps the audience to make connections. The whole point in zooming up on Tybalt and Benvolios faces is so the audience will realise that they are both important characters. An example of a mid angle shot is when Tybalt pulls back his jacket and shows his shirt and guns, whilst saying, Look upon thy death to Benvolio. This action is done slowly so that it has a greater effect of suspense on the audience and it shows the audience, that doesnt understand the Shakespearean language that Tybalt is a dangerous character due to the two guns on his waist. An establishing shot is a camera shot of a scene like the city of Verona in the montage. This gives the audience an idea of what type of town or city it is. If it is filled with constructions it shows that the city is a developing one. If a city is still developing it is run by feuding gangs and has a lot of violence and injustice. This helps the audience who does not understand the Shakespearean language to realise that the Montagues and the Capulets are the two dominant gangs in the area of Verona Beach. Students are bored and feel that they are not learning anything that is useful in the real world. Teachers are finding an increasing number of students becoming less engaged in their academic studies. There are public schools willing to bribe students to pay attention and make better grades. Instead of bribery, educators need to make the curriculum more appealing to student interests, develop critical thinking skills to be able to adapt and/or solve real life problems. Today’s world is full of media and technology use that can be used in the classroom to spice things up. This paper focuses on the integration of WebQuests, virtual video games, and virtual dissections in the science curriculum. Using Technology to Motivate Students in the Science Classroom Today, a majority of students are either bored, frustrated, or feel like school is a waste of time. Many educators find that these students will not complete assignments, participate in classroom activities, or try their best. There are a number of reasons for the lack of motivation in students including they may have learning disabilities, have bad experiences in school, fear ridicule from their peers, and or they are not learning about a subject they are interested in. Many educators find that these students will not try, will not complete assignments, or participate in classroom discussions or activities. Some students who seem unmotivated may have learning disabilities, had bad experiences in school, fear ridicule, and or are not in a class or subject they are interested in. Some of these students just sit there and daydream. While others become discipline problems by disrupting class and hurting the learning chances of others. Educators are constantly assigning detention and in-school suspension to those with discipline issues. Students who misbehave or have given up tend to have this psychological perceptive that they are compensating for their belief that they are stupid (Mendler, 2000). There are number of public schools that seem to be desperate enough for students to make better grades that they are willing to bribe students, not with candy or homework passes, but with money. There are public schools around the country that have used or are currently using programs that pay students to make better grades. Students who participate in these programs may make better grades, temporarily; however, when the cash incentives are removed the grades tend to return to their normal range. Most educators agree with Sullo (2009) statement that giving students bribes like this only â€Å"devalues education and learning.† Rather than using these extrinsic rewards, educators need to use more intrinsic system that relies on students taking more interest in the topics or materials covered. Pederson’s William’s (2004) study states that the usage of more problem based learning would work better as an intrinsic motivator. In problem based learning students have to set up their own objectives in how to solve a problem given to them by the teacher. This student centered method gives students more ownership of their goals and gives more meaning to their work. In addition, using students centered assessment, where students are involve with their own evaluation, helps students to examine what and how they have performed their tasks. Using a WebQuest Some researchers say that the way to motivate students is to cover topics that relate to real life. One way to make a topic relevant to real life is to use a WebQuest. A WebQuests are inquiry-based activities that were developed in 1995 by Bernie Dodge (March, 2003). This type of activity uses a layered process in which the learner uses the internet to facilitate the acquisition, synthesis and analysis of information. It requires the learner to take charge of their own learning, resulting in better understanding and retention of knowledge. A WebQuest is made up for six critical components: an introduction, task, resources, a step-by-step process, an evaluation, and conclusion (Yoder, 1999). When implemented correctly, WebQuests not only challenges the learner to collect and gather information, but to take the knowledge and apply it to real-life scenarios, relationships and processes. The task itself can be modified in length of time it takes to complete and groups, individual or coll ective. One of the disadvantages of WebQuests is the time it takes a teacher to create or critique a pre-made task. But as with any other good teaching methods, planning and preparation is time-consuming. Most WebQuest are free to use online. Any teachers can create their own WebQuest or use an already made WebQuest. There are WebQuest wizards available online that can help a teacher through the creation process. When using a pre-made WebQuest the teacher must go through the activity and make sure the information if correct and that all the web links are working. A science teacher could create a WebQuest that would have students look at water pollution in an area. The students task would be to research ways to prevent water pollution and ways to clean it up. A few examples of pre-made WebQuest can be found on the sites listed in listed in Table 1. Place Table 1 about here Virtual Games Current and past studies on student motivation have found that traditional instruction lacks researched strategies that could promote motivation in students (Dantonio Beisenherz; 1990). Most educators tend to stick to traditional methods of teaching to the text and having students memorizing facts. Instead, teachers need to use a combination of text, activities, and projects to better engage students. Discovery learning allows students to pursue their own answers to explain an event of what happens during a laboratory experiment is an intrinsic motivational technique. What is today’s perceived mind-waster could be one of tomorrow’s educational solutions. According to an article written by Greenemeir (2009), several educators are advocating that schools use video games because it promotes discovery learning via development of critical thinking skills that students can apply to real-life situations and enhances their understanding in math and science. Video games provide multiple modes and means that can be adapted to different learning styles. They often challenge the learner competitively in order to boost motivation and learning goals. Virtual games allow the learner to take small steps to accomplish complex tasks. Learners are often in charge of their own learning and are given feedback frequently. The Director of Future Learning Initiatives at Kauffman Foundation, Merrilea Mayo, cites studies that show a 7 to 40 percent improvement in learning when using virtual games versus the traditional lecture format (Greenemeier 2009). One of the drawbacks to using video games in an educational setting is finding quality games. Many games tout being educational, but just use superficial elements that do not actually teach content (Dewar, 2010). Educators need to make sure that winning is based on thorough knowledge of material. When creating an educational virtual game the game needs to be relevant and meaningful to the student, show that what is learned can be used in other situations, such as in real life. In addition, games need to involve the student in each aspect, motivate students by piquing their interests. Some games may require a fee, but there are also some quality activities that are free. Whyville, for example, is a virtual world that engages and teaches the learner through various constructional games, role playing and activities. Other examples of virtual games are listed in Table 2. Place Table 2 about here Virtual Dissection Another way to make the topic more interesting and students willing to do an activity would be to use virtual dissections instead of real, hands on dissections in the classroom. There are some students and/or parents that refuse to dissect a real animal for the sake of a science class. One way to get around this problem is to use a virtual dissection program. In a study (Lalley et al. 2010) performed on the virtual dissection software, V-Frog ©, the researchers found that students using the software did not learn more than students who did the actual hands on dissection. However, the advantages to using a virtual dissection can out-weigh any of the possible disadvantages. In the science class, students are able to do an in-depth study of the anatomy of both an invertebrate and vertebrate animals through dissection. Within a virtual dissection, students are able to repeat their dissection as a review; no one would have to deal with the smell, and of the decomposing specimens. In addition, by using a virtual dissection, students are not handling sharp objects or going to their next class like their specimen. There are multiple virtual dissections programs available via software and through different websites, from dissecting mammals, reptiles, owl pellets, to flowers. In addition, there are several free to use, online websites with pictures of the different dissected parts visible (see Table 3). By using online websites, a school can save money on not having to buy new specimens each year per class. In addition, students can review the material in places outside of school. Place Table 3 about here Conclusion It can be hard to motivate students, especially when educators have not been train in how to actually motivate students. Educators not only need to know how to motivate students but also in managing and coping with students who come to class with the plan to create as much disruption as possible in order to entertain themselves. More and more students are dropping out of high school because they are bored and feel that they are not learning anything that is useful in the real world. Educators need to make the curriculum more appealing to student interests, to real life events and problems.
